Napoli Beat SPAL, Keep Serie A Lead

SCC Napoli maintained their position at the top of the 2017-18 Serie A ladder on Saturday with a win against SPAL 2013, but not before the Ferrara minnows had given them a shock. SPAL drew first blood in the 13th minute, after a superbly controlled shot from Paquale Schiattarella found the back of the net.

However, an equaliser a minute later from Lorenzo Insigne and a 71st-minute header from Jose Callejon put Napoli ahead; only to have their hearts sink again when a magnificent free-kick from Federico Viviani returned the score to 2-2. Unfortunately for the plucky underdogs, Algerian Faouzi Ghoulam put away a scorcher in the 83rd minute to seal a 3-2 Napoli victory.

Juventus Put Away Four Unanswered Against Torino

Saturday’s Juventus vs Torino derby was a sad occasion for Toro fans. The defending champions delivered a crushing 4-0 defeat to a Torino side hamstrung by the loss of defender Daniele Baselli to a red card in the second half. Paulo Dybala scored twice, with a goal from Miralem Pjanic and a superb header from Alex Sandro completing the Juve tally.

So like Napoli, Juventus is now six games into the season, with six wins to show from it, and the two sides are tied on 18 points. Napoli still tops the Serie A ladder on goal difference: +17, as opposed to Juve’s +15.

Torino Lie Eighth after Three Wins

Hope isn’t completely lost for Torino supporters, however: The team is currently tied on 11 points with Sampdoria, although the latter has a goal difference of +4, compared to Toro’s +1. That leaves Torino eighth on the ladder, after three wins, two draws and only one loss in six games. The scores sound a bit like those in the online blackjack Canada enjoys, and at the end of the day, the skill needed to win is about the same.

Inter Milan lies third, after five wins and one draw, followed by Lazio, Roma and AC Milan. There’s still plenty of football action to come before next May, and if Toro can build on the flashes of excellence they showed against Juventus, their position could improve.

Plenty of Action Coming Up

Saturday sees the first match that may interest betting fans: Sampdoria vs Udinese, with Udinese favourites at 12/7 and Sampdoria offered at 19/10. On Sunday, Napoli are odds-on at 2/13 to beat Cagliari at 22/1, while Inter at 3/10 is similarly fancied to beat Benevento at 12/1.

Torino are also 4/9 favourites to beat 17/2 Verona, and Lazio are at 4/9 against Sassuolo at 17/2. AC Milan, at 17/10, are only slightly more likely, according to betting sites, to outplay Roma, offered at 7/4. But don’t make the mistake of discounting the underdog.

Juventus will play Sunday’s final match against Atalanta, with the Piedmont side at 3/4, versus the Lombardy underdogs at 23/5.
